This is the fifth edition of Monadnock Research's published analysis of the Big Four's consulting practices, as they continue to seek organic growth and strategic M&A with a special focus on non-audit services. Fiscal 2014 global non-audit advisory services of the Big Four, including tax services, increased to $70.17 billion (in USD here and throughout), an 8.4% increase over 2013 levels. Total non-tax consulting and advisory services of Deloitte, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young were $42.36 billion, an increase of 9.9% over fiscal 2013. Overall, Big Four fiscal 2014 revenues were $120.34 billion, up 5.81%. Growth in advisory, however, contrasts sharply with an overall increase of 2.38% growth in audit services, up from 0.25% last year, to $50.17 billion. This Note highlights the growing risks of the ever-increasing proportion of advisory relative to audit services at Big Four firms. It also explores the paradox faced by Big Four leaders that have made strategic decis...

The Roland Berger Strategy Consultants partnership had been considering its strategic alternatives in recent months, including whether or not the firm would be sold or form a strategic partnership. An "overwhelming majority" of the firm's 250 partners agreed this week, however, to keep the firm independent. Partners had agreed to pursue "external options" in May 2013, including takeover proposals, and discussions with a number of firms took place. The latest acquisition talks culminating in protracted deliberations with Ernst & Young (EY). Those negotiations failed to result in a deal and presented a major distraction to firm business in the process. PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte had also explored a potential deal, but the EY transaction was the most promising. Roland Berger's senior leadership team ultimately concluded that an offer from EY would be rejected by the firm's partnership and proposed that the firm remain independent. The firm will now execute...
Ernst & Young has acquired Greenwich Consulting Group to strengthen advisory offerings globally in the areas of strategy, marketing, digital and analytics. Greenwich's 130 staff, including 80 in France, will join EY's Advisory group that includes 700 in France and 30,000 globally. It will act as the nucleus for EY's new Strategy, Marketing and Innovation practice, a key component of the firm's global strategy to significantly expand firm's consulting capabilities. Accenture is reportedly in talks to acquire strategy specialist, Booz & Co. With average strategy rates of large IT consulting firms and the Big Four nearly half that of the largest strategy specialists, Accenture has more to gain than anyone if it can re-brand its strategy and operations consulting. Until recently Booz&Co had been focusing primarily on independent organic expansion, with some growth through acquisitions. In April, Booz&Co closed the acquisition of Düsseldorf-based international operations consultancy, Management Engineers, and acquired Katzenbach Partners, in July of 2009. Three years ago the firm called off its proposed merger with A.T. Kearney when partners decided to go it alone. The mutual non-compete between Booz&Co and Booz Allen Hamilton expired two years ago, following their 2008 split. So there appear to be no potential competition conflicts at the company or sector levels that could stand in the way of a deal. MR estimates that Booz&Co has around 3,000 s...

On the heels of its acquisition of strategy consultancy Monitor, Deloitte is again in talks to acquire Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. The vote against the proposed combination was carried in 2010 by a Roland Berger partner margin of close to 100 percent. We reported then that the overwhelming lack of support within the Roland Berger partnership made it surprising that negotiations made it as far as it did before falling apart. At that time Roland Berger had around 200 partners. Today we estimate it has increased by 25% to 250 partners globally, serving clients from 49 offices in 35 countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and the Middle East. That is up from 36 offices in 25 countries when Deloitte first made its offer in 2010. (765 words)...

P & L was a niche advisory firm focused on fund administration system selection, implementation and design for private equity (PE) and alternative investment managers. Shawn Pride, the Founder and CEO of P&L, will now lead Ernst & Young's US advisory services practice for private equity firms, and will be based in New York. (485 words)...

Global non-audit advisory services of Big Four firms, including tax services, increased to $61.16 billion (USD) in fiscal 2012, a 9% increase over 2011 levels. Total non-tax consulting and advisory services of Deloitte, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young were $36.1 billion in USD, an increase of 12.06% over fiscal 2011. That compares to an overall increase of 6.42% for the Big Four across all service areas, and mean growth of just 3.4% in audit services. KPMG's audit revenues actually decreased by 1.62% in fiscal 2012. This is the third year Monadnock Research has published analysis of the consulting and advisory services operations of the Big Four. We note that the Big Four continue to seek organic growth and strategic M&A in non-audit advisory areas. This Research Note offers an in-depth analysis of that, highlighting the risks associated with a high and growing proportion of advisory to audit services at Big Four firms, and the conflict risk this unique mix of servic...
Ernst & Young Terco, the firm's Brazilian affiliate, has acquired Axia Value Chain. Each of the firm's service lines showed growth, led by advisory services growth of 16.2%. Assurance revenues were up 4.1%, Tax 7.0%, and Transactions 9.4%. The firm's strongest performing sectors with double digit growth, included Automotive, Life Sciences, Mining & Metals and Oil & Gas. Brazil saw organic revenue growth of 17.5%, while India, Africa, China and the CIS increased revenues 19.8%, 10.2%, 11.8% and 15.6%, respectively. (415 words)...
