2011 Operations Consulting Rates
Sample and MethodologyThe comprehensive rate structures of eleven large client organizations are presented and analyzed in this study across a number of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotech, high tech, communications, energy, financial services, public services, retail, and metals and mining. More than 85 percent of the rate structures were from global entities, and all were from organizations that fall within the 1,000 largest global organizations. The majority fell within the top 500. Information was collected through November 2010 for negotiated rates for which master service agreements had been established for that period through 2011, and through 2012 and longer in some cases.
One hundred and twenty five rate structures from 75 firms were analyzed for the operations consulting service category across the client organizations that presented consulting rates. Not every firm provided rates for each professional category. The exact number of rates included in the statistical analysis for each category is detailed in the descriptive statistics.
Not all firms quoted rates for all categories, and we made judgment calls on certain rates that were quoted to ensure that we were comparing like rates across clients and firms. For example, if a firm bid a rate for an Associate as its only rate for the Consultant level, and the client reported that rate under the Associate Consultant category, and we know that firm calls its consultants Associates, we moved that rate from the Associate Consultant category to the Consultant category.
Also, if a firm presented rates for the Consultant grouping only, and we know that Senior and Associate Consultants will provide services at that same rate, we included that rate for those two categories as well. These and other objective measures were taken to ensure a proper rationalization of rates for comparison purposes.
Firm rates were discarded from the analysis if the name of the firm proposing the rate statistics was not provided, or could not be definitively determined, even if the client provided the practice category of the rate structure. Rates from firms that were a subject of this analysis for the operations consulting rate category included: Accenture, ADL, A.T. Kearney, Bain, BCG, Booz&Co, Capgemini, Celerant, CSC, Deloitte, Huron, IBM, McKinsey, PA Consulting, PRTM, and PwC. All information and analysis presented in this report was conducted by industry experts with decades of experience in the consulting profession, to ensure integrity of the data and its proper interpretation.
