Negotiating Blended Rates for Consulting Services
Monadnock Research (Vol VII, No 1) - 4 Feb 2014
Blended rates are sometimes offered by providers of consulting services, or negotiated by sourcing and procurement professionals, to help simplify billing and payment processes. While blended rates may eliminate a lot of detail and dramatically simplify administrative aspects, negotiating the right blended rate is anything but simple. In most cases we recommend that clients avoid blended rates entirely. But if the organization has made a decision to go with them, there are factors to consider in negotiating competitive rates for master service agreements (MSAs) and project-specific statements of work (SOW). This Research Note details our 6-step process to simplify analysis and help clients negotiate better deals with strategic firm partners. (2,150 words, one graphic) . . . More

Analysis of Potential Booz&Co Accenture Combination: Impact on Client Rates
Monadnock Research (Vol VI, No 47)- 6 August 2013
Accenture is reportedly in talks to acquire strategy specialist, Booz & Co. With average strategy rates of large IT consulting firms and the Big Four nearly half that of the largest strategy specialists, Accenture has more to gain than anyone if it can re-brand its strategy and operations consulting. Until recently Booz&Co had been focusing primarily on independent organic expansion, with some growth through acquisitions. In April, Booz&Co closed the acquisition of Düsseldorf-based international operations consultancy, Management Engineers, and acquired Katzenbach Partners, in July of 2009. Three years ago the firm called off its proposed merger with A.T. Kearney when partners decided to go it alone. The mutual non-compete between Booz&Co and Booz Allen Hamilton expired two years ago, following their 2008 split. So there appear to be no potential competition conflicts at the company or sector levels that could stand in the way of a deal. MR estimates that Booz&Co has around 3,000 staff serving clients from 58 offices around the world, with 2012 revenues of approximately $1.35 billion. Research Note includes MR perspective on the proposed transaction along with details on average 2013 strategy rates for the world's largest strategy specialists compared to those of the Big Four and the largest IT consultancies. The Consulting Classification Test: Is it Consulting, or Something Else Entirely?
Monadnock Research (Vol VI, No 45) - 17 July 2013
Characteristics that distinguish independent consulting from work that is best addressed by internal resources or temporary labor are usually clear, but in practice the ultimate classification of work performed that is labeled "consulting" often differs significantly from any reasonable definition. Monadnock Research defines consulting simply as "independent objective advice", and whether it's referred-to as "consulting" or "advisory" services, the same definition applies. We find, however, that this definition is an over-simplification. So we have developed a framework for testing whether an engagement or relationship with a firm fits the definition of consulting, and justifies consulting-level rates. Associated characteristics include objectivity, independence, project orientation, specialized expertise and temporary nature of the work required to address the organizational need. This Research Note includes details on the Consulting Classification Test, including analysis of Navigant's relationship with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and a copy of the Moreland Commission's report that includes details on Navigant's rates and total consulting expenditures of LIPA's 65+ professional services vendors between 2008 and 2012.
