The U.S. Senate Committee on Finance's Ranking Member, Charles Grassley, has been an advocate for increased transparency in relationships between consultants and the healthcare and life sciences companies they represent, and plans to re-introduce the Sunshine Act to legislate transparency.
Senators Grassley and Herb Kohl will soon reintroduce legislation known as the Physicians Payments Sunshine Act, which would require drug makers and medical device manufacturers to disclose payments they make to physicians and others that act as consultants. The payments would be disclosed on the Web through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' site. Grassley's recent efforts target Medtronic, the University of Wisconsin, and one of the world's most prolific orthopoedic physician innovators.
